Admissions Procedure
The British School of Ulaanbaatar has an academically non-selective enrolment policy.
However, we apply the following criteria prior to enrolment to ensure that we can meet the needs of all students in each class. Please consider these criteria before beginning the registration process.
Language:
It is not required that all students be fluent in English, and English as an Additional Language (EAL) support will be provided for children who require additional help. However, as all subjects are taught in English, the school will assess the spoken and written English skills of new students. There is an expectation that, in order to gain entry, each child will demonstrate an increasingly higher standard of English according to their age.
Age:
Our year groups are determined in accordance with the National Curriculum of England and Wales, without exception. Please refer to the table below to determine the appropriate year group for your child.
Nationality
BSU welcomes a mix of nationalities to the student body and does not prioritise any one nationality above another.
Allocation of Houses
The school reserves the right to allocate students to School Houses according to availability and in order to maintain balanced year groups within each house. Wherever possible, children from the same family will be placed in the same house.
Students with SLD
BSU is not a specialist centre for children who have Specific Learning Difficulties, but it does provide a sympathetic environment and limited support for those with mild difficulties.
Students applying for entrance to BSU must fulfil the requirements of the school’s entrance examination and should be able to cope with the curriculum at BSU.
Waiting list
Class sizes at BSU are limited to 24 students from Year 1 upwards, and fewer for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Once a year group is full, further applicants will be informed and may still take the entrance assessment. If successful, they may be placed on a waiting list for that year group.
Students with Disability
The policy of BSU is to apply our entrance criteria to all potential students regardless of any physical or mental disability of which it is aware, subject to its obligation to make reasonable adjustments not to put any disabled student or potential student at any disadvantage.
Ability in English
It is not required that all students be fluent in English at the start of their education at BSU, and English as an Additional Language (EAL) support will be provided for students who require additional help.
However, as all subjects are taught in English, the school will assess each student’s spoken and written English.
