Life at BSU #23 Telmuun Lim

Updated: Sep 17

Presenting the next unique story of our series #LifeatBSU, where guests share their stories and experiences at the British School of Ulaanbaatar. Today’s guest is Year 10 student Telmuun Lim, who shares his incredible journey to the top of the Altai Mountains.

I’m Telmuun Lim, and right now I’m in Year 10 at the British School of Ulaanbaatar. I’ve been at the school for most of my life, and it’s become a big part of who I am. Growing up here has given me a strong foundation—not just academically, but in other areas too. One of the things I appreciate the most about BSU is how much it prepares us for the future. We’re constantly reminded of the importance of earning recognized degrees, and there are so many opportunities that help us get closer to our dreams. Whether it’s through guidance about universities or access to resources, I feel like the possibilities are endless.

One of the most meaningful things for me has been the friendships I’ve made. I have a childhood friend named Itgel—we’ve known each other since we were really young. There’s something special about having a friend who’s been with you through so many stages of life, especially at a school like BSU. We’ve grown together and shared so many memories, both good and bad. Itgel and I have been through it all, and I’m lucky to have a friend like him.

This past summer was one of the highlights of my life so far. My mom and I decided to take a trip to Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain, in Bayan-Olgii province. It was a journey I’ll never forget. We flew to the province, and the first night we stayed at the base camp, which is right at the foot of the mountain. The next morning, we started our climb. It took an entire day to reach the summit and come back down. I remember how exhausting it was; my legs felt like they couldn’t take another step at times, but something kept pushing me forward. When I finally stood at the top, surrounded by snow and wind, it was such an overwhelming moment. The view from up there, even in the middle of a blizzard, was absolutely breathtaking. The feeling of accomplishment after a tiring climb was indescribable. I still can’t believe I reached the summit of Altai Tawan Bogd at the age of thirteen. It feels like a major milestone in my life.

As of now, we haven’t planned our next mountain adventure yet, but my parents and I have talked about maybe climbing to Everest Base Camp someday. It’s just an idea for now, but who knows? We’ve always loved exploring the outdoors, and we might take on that challenge if we get the chance.

Looking forward, in five years, I want to be a better version of myself. I’ve realized that personal growth doesn’t just come from external achievements but from within. I want to focus on self-love, compassion, and becoming someone who’s kind and thoughtful towards others. I hope to make continuous progress, both in my personal life and in my education. Right now, I’m interested in law or maybe going into the business sector. I’m not exactly sure yet, but I do know that whatever path I choose, I’ll put my heart into it. The important thing for me is to keep improving, always striving for something better.

I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, and I look forward to what’s next. Sharing my experiences today has reminded me of how far I’ve come, but also how much more there is ahead of me.
